Proud design traditions have long characterised the Danish furniture landscape with Modern classics such as Hans Wegner’s Wishbone chair and Arne Jacobsen’s 7-Series chair becoming global design icons. But what about the next generation? Who are the masters of the future? In order to sustain and replenish Danish design heritage, television network DR1 has gathered five talented furniture designers and challenged them to create the country’s next furniture icon in the new culture-meets-reality TV show, Danmarks Næste Klassiker, Denmark’s Next Classic.
Director of the prestigious Design Museum Danmark, Anne-Louise Sommer and renowned contemporary furniture designer, Kasper Salto, is the judging team which invites the five young furniture talents to become design masters of their generation. Host Mette Bluhme Rieck manages the contest when the designers, over six programs, try their hand at designing and making a dining chair, a dining table, an armchair, a sofa, a lamp and a piece of children’s furniture, with a winner chosen each episode.
At the series final, the judges choose one of the six winning designs to be crowned Denmark’s Next Classic. In each program, the furniture designers are stretched creatively and mentally to meet both the judges’ demands and their own professional standards. But, in the end, the five inspiring works that result each week show that beautiful and functional Danish design is still alive and well in Denmark.
