The Story of Grandt Design

Curious about the origins of their new sofa, clients this month inspired us to share the story of one of the brands we are most proud to represent at Danish Red, Grandt Design. Old school in more ways than one, our communications with Børge take place strictly over the phone (in Danish of course) and accounts arrive in the post. Email, like many ‘modern’ business tools, has yet to gain currency with a this quietly proud Danish furniture maker. And we wouldn’t want it any other way.

Historien bag Grandt Design / The Story of Grandt Design

Grandt Design started with Gunnar Grandt in 1965 in Hjortkær near Aabenraa. Gunnar was originally a furniture upholsterer at Fredericia Stolefabrik. In 1966 he moved his company to Industrivej in Rødding. Since 1982, Børge Slothuus has been in charge of the company, where he has skillfully managed to maintain the careful and time-consuming work of building a sofa from scratch. Until recently, Børge worked alongside his wife Jutta whose fine leather working skills contributed greatly to the high production standards of the brand. Grandt Design is probably one of the very few places in Denmark where the best furniture traditions have been rigorously maintained over decades.

As the Grandt website openly declares, all this may have an effect on the price of the product – but it certainly also has an effect on expression and durability. In recent years, there has been an awareness of the importance of sustainable production: local Danish manufacturing, sustainable raw materials that comply with EU rules, Danish labor rules and environmental considerations. Furniture from Grandt Design can live up to that!

Model 75 Sofa

Designed in 1975 by Gunnar Grandt, the Model 75, our most popular Grandt sofa, is a classic with musical lines. The beautiful back with arches, suitable for an open space in the room. The sofa simply has no back. The slightly curved armrests, which at the same time slope downwards in front – allow a relaxing sitting comfort where one’s arm can rest perfectly.

The rich tan leather sofa in the slideshow is the Model 75 3-seat sofa in Camo Montana leather with soaped oak legs, made for Danish Red in 2020. The sofa was then purchased in February 2021 by the charming clients who inspired this post.
